In Nazilli, a boiler explosion caused a fire that burned down a paper factory established on an area of 12,000 square meters. The smoke from the fire was visible from kilometers away.
According to the information obtained, the fire, which reportedly started in the boiler room for an unknown reason, spread to the main building under the effect of the wind. The explosion of flammable materials around the main building caused the fire to spread further. The fire quickly grew after spreading to the scrapyard of Retek Inc., as the waste materials were mostly paper.
Fire trucks belonging to Nazilli Municipality and Kuyucak Fire Department, along with 2 water tenders, 1 helicopter from the Forestry Department, and many firefighting workers, intervened in the fire. Since 1989, Retek Cellulose Recycling Industry, which had been operating on 12,000 square meters of open area and 5,000 square meters of closed space, was almost entirely destroyed except for the main building.
The fire, which was fought with 6 fire trucks, 2 water tenders, and 1 helicopter, was brought under control in 2 hours, while cooling efforts are still ongoing. Residents living near the factory watched the fire in fear. The fact that no workers were present in the factory due to the Bayram holiday was relieving, but the factory suffered extensive material damage. An investigation into the fire is ongoing.
